Matthew Guirdham, Barnfield Construction’s latest quantity surveying graduate is elated after winning the ‘Young Employee of the Year’ Award at the glittering Burnley Business Awards last night.
Matthew joined Barnfield Construction in May 2012 after he approached the company and offered to work (for free) in the Quantity Surveying department over the summer holidays in order to gain on-the-job experience for the 3 year full time Quantity Surveying degree he was studying at Salford University.
In June 2012 the management at Barnfield were so impressed with Matthew’s drive, ambition and positive ‘can do’ attitude it was agreed that Matthew would be employed as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor and Barnfield would fund his degree.
During his first year at Barnfield Matthew was quickly accepted as a team player who was eager and willing to learn on any project he was asked to work on.
During the following 2 years he shadowed 4 members of the Quantity Surveying team (1 per day each week) whilst attending University to continue his studies on Fridays.
Excelling not only at Barnfield but at University too, in 2012 Matthew received the BAM Nuttall prize for excellence in Construction Economics.
Through his determination, dedication, and passion he achieved the highest exam results out of his year.
In 2013 Matthew was given his first solo job which was to Quantity Survey a £500,000 office extension for Wardle Storeys Limited in Earby. Jumping in at the deep end Matthew successfully completed this project on time and under budget with no issues or set-backs along the way.
Since then Matthew has worked with various clients on industrial units in Liverpool, social housing schemes in Bradford, heritage town centre regeneration in Bacup together with private housing schemes, educational schemes (UTC) and Banny’s drive-thru restaurant all in Burnley with values ranging from £1m to £10m.
Matthew went on to graduate in June 2014 with a First Class Honours Degree in Quantity Surveying. This accolade was further amplified when he won the high ranking Salford University Vice Chancellors Award for achieving a First Class Honours Degree through hardship. He was personally praised by the Vice Chancellor at his Graduation Ceremony as a “beacon to all present and potential future students”.
Matthew is active in promoting the industry and frequently offers his own time to take part in employee forums and most recently student open days at the UTC in Burnley.
In addition to this Matthew has saved clients and Barnfield hundreds of thousands of pounds with his fresh innovative ideas and sound knowledge of alternative/cost effective building materials.
Chairman and Managing Director, Tim Webber MBE commented “I’m delighted with the progress Matthew has made since his arrival at Barnfield Construction. He has a real ‘can-do’ attitude, coupled with lots of enthusiasm which is applied to all aspects of his work.
Matthew’s future is very bright and we hold him in very high esteem, not just at a senior level but amongst his colleagues too. He also has a keen desire to progress through other divisions of the company & I feel sure we will see him steadily progress to a senior management level in the fullness of time.
We are extremely proud that Matthew is a member of our team and has won this fantastic accolade.”
Matthew commented: “I’m absolutely overwhelmed to receive this award. I’m looking forward to using my skills to make a difference to the local community and townscape. Burnley is undergoing large scale change and I would like to think that my involvement in delivering local schemes is at the forefront of this evolution.
I hope to give back to the industry ensuring my personal development through Barnfield has a much broader impact allowing others to ‘get into construction and hopefully gleam the same positive impacts I have received”
