VALUE: £3.55 million

Duration: 38 weeks

Barnfield Construction were selected at competitive tender and appointed by Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust to provide a new state of the art rehabilitation centre at the Montagu Hospital Rehabilitation Unit in Mexborough.

There was a real need for the unit as previously there was no intermediate place for patients to go following discharge from hospital.

The scheme was of a very high profile to the trust as it used a model of care never seen before in the UK. The new centre follows a model similar to that used in the Netherlands which is a leader in the rehabilitation of patients. It was critical that the scheme was a success as it will be scrutinised by many, looking closely at patient turnaround and recovery rates.

The new 58 bed centre cares for people recovering from accidents and medical conditions including stroke, broken hips and amputations.

The Centre, which was designed and project managed by Capita Symonds, depicts a bright, welcoming and homely environment more homey than a traditional hospital unit.

Patients are able to make drinks and cook meals for themselves in a spacious kitchen-diner as part of their therapy.  Small touches such as colour themes in different areas make it easier for visually-impaired patients or those with dementia to find their way around.

The scheme achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’.
